Cheapest ways to get a professional website in 2026
The cheapest professional website in 2026 is not the one with the lowest monthly fee. It is the one that costs the least in money and in your hours together, and that your customers can actually use on a phone. Here are the five routes, what each costs, and who each is for. Prices are typical ranges from the sources linked, checked October 5, 2026.
1. Do-it-yourself builders: $16 to $39 a month, plus your time
Wix, Squarespace, GoDaddy and Hostinger sell a template, an editor and hosting for one monthly fee. On annual plans, Wix starts at $17 a month and Squarespace at $16 (Tooltester, Wix; Tooltester, Squarespace). The cash cost is the lowest of any route.
The hidden cost is time. Most owners spend 20 to 40 hours getting a first version up, and the writing is the part that stalls. A builder also locks the site to its platform: you cannot take a Wix site to another host. Choose a builder if you enjoy the work and will keep doing it. Avoid it if the site has been "nearly finished" for a year.
2. Templates and themes: $30 to $100 once, plus hosting and someone to install them
A WordPress theme from a marketplace costs $30 to $100. You then need hosting ($5 to $30 a month), a domain, security updates, and either the skill to customize the theme or someone to do it. The result can be good and you own it, but the maintenance never stops, and a hacked or broken WordPress site is a common reason people call us.
3. Freelancers: $1,500 to $6,000 for the build
A freelance designer builds a custom site for roughly $1,500 to $6,000 (WD Strategies, February 2026), with senior specialists charging $4,000 to $12,000 (Pitchsite). Expect four to eight weeks, a brief, two or three rounds of feedback, and then hosting and changes billed separately, typically $10 to $200 a month for hosting and upkeep.
A good freelancer is excellent value for an unusual project. The risk is the one who disappears, taking the logins with them. Ask who hosts the site and who holds the domain before you pay.
4. Subscription website services: $50 to $200 a month, build included
This is the newer route, and the one Site Squad belongs to. The provider designs, writes, hosts and maintains the site for a flat monthly fee, usually with no setup charge. Site Squad charges $99 a month, sends a free first draft within 24 hours of a short quiz, and includes hosting, security, backups, the contact form and every change you ask for.
The trade-off is honest: you do not get an editor to log into, and if you stop paying, the site comes down at the end of the month you have paid for. For an owner who wants the site handled, it is the lowest total cost in the first year after builders, and the only route that shows you the finished site before you pay.
5. Agencies: $6,000 to $20,000 and up
Boutique agencies charge $6,000 to $20,000 for a small-business site, and mid-size agencies $15,000 to $75,000 (Pitchsite), over eight to twelve weeks, followed by a maintenance retainer. For a company with a brand program, several stakeholders and a complex site, that process is the product. For a plumber or a dentist it is mostly meetings.
The comparison in one table
| Route | First-year cash | Your hours | Time to launch | You own it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DIY builder | $192 to $468 | 20 to 40, then ongoing | Weeks to never | Content yes, site locked to the platform |
| Template plus hosting | $100 to $500 plus help | 10 to 30, then upkeep | Days to weeks | Yes |
| Freelancer | $1,600 to $8,000 | 5 to 15 in briefs and rounds | 4 to 8 weeks | Usually, on final payment |
| Subscription service (Site Squad) | $1,188 | About 1 | 24 hours to draft | No; built, hosted and maintained for you |
| Agency | $7,000 to $25,000 | 15 to 40 in meetings | 8 to 12 weeks | Yes, on final payment |
How to choose
If you have time and like design, use a builder. If you need something unusual, hire a freelancer. If you are a company with a committee, hire an agency. If you want a professional site this week without doing the work, and you want to judge it before you pay, use a subscription service. Whatever you choose, keep your domain in your own name and know who holds the hosting login.
